Gay Hawaii? - The highs and lows of KuteLuvr

About Gay Hawaii?

Previous Entry Gay Hawaii? Nov. 16th, 2007 @ 05:40 pm Next Entry
So, I'm thinking about a quick jaunt to Hawaii... and I know that I'd prob like to stay in the W (thanks to jetboyca getting me into fancy schmancy hotesl ;)... but I'd rather be somewhere more... uhm... "gay friendly". Maybe that doesn't matter... and we're not talking circuit party or anything... but a gay club would be nice.

Which island would that be and why? (comment below. Thanks!)

i admit, i have to qualify this with saying i've not been to the other islands, nor know if they have much in the way of gay life. from what i understand, tehy don't have much in the way of any life, which is the point for some people. there are, however, several gay clubs in waikiki, so you would have some options there.

We went to Maui a few years ago, it was nice. I've never been to Oahu before though, so I have nothing to compare it to. Unfortunately, there's not much gay in Maui, other than one small gay resort, the Maui Sunseeker. Maui is pretty relaxing, but has some interesting sites. If you want gay bars/clubs or any gay nightlife, you are limited to Oahu.

Honolulu W

ooooh.... as much as I generally love W properties -- definitely skip the W in honolulu. the location is nice, but as far as price vs. room/property quality goes you can do *much* better. the W honolulu is basically a $550 a night generic room in an old building with some "W" music and half-assed attempt at hip lighting in the lobby. I waited *hours* past the posted check-in time for my (yawn inspiring) room to be available... and countless minutes waiting for the one un-broken elevator to shuttle me to or from my floor.

I'd go for the moana surfrider (about 1/4 mile away, also right on the ocean). great hotel. good restaurants. tons of the sorts of amenities you'd expect when being butt-raped at honolulu hotel rates :-)

W honolulu is only the 2nd W I've ever been to that kinda sucked. all the others have been really nice.

Only go to the other islands if you want peace and quiet and don't mind places closing at sunset. Otherwise go to Oahu.

FWIW... the only gay nightlife I've ever seen in hawaii was on oahu. there are a couple of clubs only a few minutes walk from both the W and the surfrider.

You have to stay on Oahu for anything of the "organized and social" gay variety. I'll second jetboyca's comments re: the W in Honolulu. Definitely not getting what you pay for.

If you want any gay life whatsoever, Oahu is the way to go. Most of the beaches are hideous and fat-tourist-infested but there's a gay one that's pretty decent.

We spent the first night at some dumpy hotel -- pretty much what Mark described, and the rest of the time at the Cabana at Wikiki. ( http://www.cabana-waikiki.com/ ) That place was excellent -- great service, nice room. You have to put up with the creepy guy laying naked on his couch with his door open, but they'll look the other way when you sample the local population in their hot tub. :-)
